Intraocular Lens (IOLs) Implants

After age 40, most people will experience a condition called PRESBYOPIA. Presbyopic individuals require bifocal glasses or separate reading glasses in order to see clearly at close range. Multifocal intraocular lens implants are now available to achieve distance and near vision after cataract surgery.

MULTIFOCAL LENSES, such as AcrySof® ReStor® and AMO® ReZoom™ are intraocular lens implants which are intended to provide near, intermediate and distance vision. Effective presbyopia-correction should allow cataract patients to read, work on a computer and drive a car with minimal or no dependence on glasses or contact lenses. These intraocular multifocal lenses are approved by the FDA.

The multifocal intraocular lens implant for presbyopic patients is identical to cataract removal, in that the human lens inside the eye is removed and the multifocal lens in inserted. The procedure is performed one eye at a time, with the second eye normally the same procedure approximately one month later.
